The Lock Stock was originally called The Fishmongers arms, then The Hunters Stables and Yard before becoming The Lock Stock & Barrel. If we trace Crowle history back to The Doomsday book, there were 31 fisheries in Crowle and just before Vermuden drained the Isle around 1609/1612 there were 5 fisheries. It would be fair to expect that this pub dates back to before the Isle was drained and the fisheries disappeared. The smaller front part of the pub is built using old ships timbers as main supports for roofs and ceilings, these can be clearly seen including worm holes. During excavations for upgrading the fireplace several freshwater oyster shells were dug up, bearing out that the place was frequented by certainly shell fish eating people.
Researching licensing does not give any information as the licence moves from the pub to the owner as we go back in time.
As time permits we will endeavour to trace the history as far as possible.
